It’s funny that I was a philosophy major, and continued to read philosophy throughout my twenties, but never got into Epicureanism until I turned 31. I remember reading a book on the philosophical ideas that influenced the American revolution in college, of which Epicureanism featured prominently, but that’s about it.
Recently, I read two books, didn’t finish another, and watched a few YouTube videos. I can’t say I disagree much with the Epicureans when it comes to happiness or ethics. In fact, many Epicurean teachings are just how I have organically lived my life.
Over the next few posts (the first one will publish tomorrow), I’ll talk about what I like about Epicureanism. Please note, I’m not an expert in Epicureanism, nor am I an academic. I learned about Epicureanism in the last two months. I’m an internet hobbyist.
This will not be a comprehensive overview of Epicureanism, just what I am attracted to. I’m just writing this as just some guy who likes philosophy.
Here’s what I’ll be talking about:
- The Prudential Hedonism of Epicureanism
- The Epicurean Theory of Desire
- The Epicurean Case For Behaving Well
I have other thoughts on Epicureanism that I may share later, but right now, these are the subjects I’m spree-writing about. I hope you’ll read these, and if you enjoy them, give me a subscription
